 are these your ugly memories?

LISTEN: The Dandy Warhols ‘The Autumn Carnival’ (Anton Newcombe Remix)

It seems as though The Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre have let their long-standing differences slide, as Brian Jonestown‘s lead, Anton Newcombe, everything takes to the decks to remix ‘The Autumn Carnival’ from this year’s This Machine
Newcombe takes the opportunity to expand the 4 minute indie rock ballad into a 6 minute electronic masterpiece. He makes singer Courtney Taylor-Taylor‘s words sound more sinister, keeping the drawl, removing the indie riff and upping the synth. Shoegaze elemts are cut, making this remix sound cleaner- more like something you could hear/ dance to at DISCOVERY. It just feels more epic, expanding the refrain and adding FX. Those green green eyes delved into the soul of this song and came out with something that extracts the grittiness of the lyrics, without the gritty indie sound. That contrast is what makes this track moving.
Take a peek at the clip below. It’s always good to see representations of working-class people (cue unequal rep in media rant). It seems as though the autumn carnival is where this boy has his time to shine, so they say.  In the words of Taylor-Taylor, it’s about the divide between young and old; ‘the theme here is how, as we age, our view of youth and our feelings regarding what it means become paper thin and almost totally unrealistic.’
